A surfer noticed the two men off a Hampton, NH, beach around 7:30 p.m. screaming for help, New Hampshire State Police said.
The surfer pulled one of the men — later identified as Luis Colon-De-Lara, age 28, of Lawrence — to safety. The Good Samaritan then called 911 to report the second man desperately needed rescue.
Firefighters pulled Bethancourt-Adames from the water and performed CPR as they rushed him to a Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where doctors later pronounced him dead.
Authorities ask anyone who witnessed the incident to contact New Hampshire State Police at (603) 227-2112.
